The LeRoi Nickel Duo Pacific Northwest pianists Timothy and Nancy LeRoi Nickel have championed the performance of original piano duet music for 30 years, with imaginative programming in performances throughout the US and Europe, extensive research in libraries around the world, commercial recordings, college ensemble classes, teaching and coaching, and a summer music festival devoted to the performance and teaching of piano duet music. They have performed twice at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York, gave their London debut in 1990 in the Purcell room, and were invited to appear at the South Bohemian Music Festival in the Czech Republic in 1996. The Nickels were the first piano duet recipients of the Advanced Certificate at the Guildhall School in London. The Nickels are known for their creative programming of piano duet music, often incorporating other media and collaborating with other artists. A grant from Oregon's Regional Arts and Culture Council in 1994 supported a series of Family Classics concerts in collaboration with visual artist Judith Wyss, mime Albert Alter, and choreographer Meg Potter with dancers from the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. In 1990 they performed the West Coast premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Arias and Barcarolles for soprano, baritone, and piano duet. In the summer of 2000 they created the annual Piano Duet Festival by the Sea in Lincoln City, Oregon, a festival dedicated to the performance and study of original music for one piano-four hands.
